Baby showers are amazing! It’s a great opportunity to get lots and lots of wonderful gifts for your new baby.
The problem with baby showers, however, is that sometimes good-intentioned friends and family get gifts that they think you will like – not what you need, (or what was on your baby registry). After all, when you are in a store, it is really hard to simply walk pass adorable baby items, especially if you know someone who is about to have a baby.
And so, they buy cute baby items that often get forgotten in the back of the closet. Or, you end up returning half the gifts and replacing them with the items below – in other words…
Baby Items You Actually Need
This list of baby items are the things that you probably didn’t get, you probably didn’t think about, but you really do need.
Relief For Hemorrhoids
No one tells you about the hemorrhoids, but chances are good they’ll be coming for you.
According to the NCBI, there are populations where up to 85% of pregnant women suffer from hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids suck, big time.
There are several hemorrhoid treatments on the market but try not to waste your time with ineffective treatments that only prolong the hemorrhoids, instead of taking them away.
Infrared Forehead Thermometer
Babies get sick and sometimes they have fevers, so you absolutely want to have a thermometer to know just how high your baby’s fever is at any given time. That one is a given. However, don’t get just any thermometer.
What is great about these infrared thermometers is that you can check your baby’s temperature on his/her forehead, without necessarily waking your baby. This is a big plus, especially if you had a hard time getting your baby to sleep in the first place.
Baby Tylenol and/or Motrin
When babies have fevers, you will need medicine to bring down the fever. Your pediatrician will likely recommend Baby Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen Infants Drops until your baby’s fever goes away.
Some pediatricians will recommend either Tylenol or Ibuprofen, while others tell you to alternate between the two.
These are also available at your local Target and Walmart, but before you pick up a bottle – do check the label to make sure it’s safe for your baby’s age.
Baby Snot Sucker
Babies can’t blow their own noses so they often have to suffer from the congestion when a clean nose would make all the difference.
The snot sucker is not as horrible as it sounds – it’s actually really great. Yes, you literally suck the snot out of your baby’s nose BUT there is a filter so there is no chance you could actually suck their snot into your mouth.
This is an extremely helpful accessory when your baby is ill.
A Diaper Caddy That Fits At Least A Week's Worth Of Supplies
Imagine this – you are exhausted and you are sitting on the couch with your baby, who is wide awake. You smell something foul coming from the diaper but the fresh diapers are all the way on the other side of the house.
This is why you need a diaper caddy to keep all your baby’s supplies. It allows you to change your baby wherever you are, without any fuss. Do make sure you get a caddy that is big enough and strong enough to hold all your supplies. There is really little sense in having a diaper caddy that is too small or too flimsy when the whole point of having a diaper caddy is to make your life easier.
A caddy is a must-have because you will need one for your baby car kit, too.
Vaseline And Gauze For A Circumcision
If your little boy has had a circumcision, you will need a lot of vaseline and gauze to keep his little gentleman protected. You will need to put on fresh gauze and vaseline with every diaper change. Since newborn babies can have up to 10 diaper changes per day, you will be going through a lot.
This is not a time to go for scented vaseline either. Go for the most natural stuff there is.
Baby Hangers
The reason you will need a lot of baby hangers is because you will likely get a lot of baby clothes.
This is the nature of having a new baby. People just cannot resist walking pass cute baby clothes, without buying it. It’s human nature. And if you have relatives who are big sports fans, they will want to buy baby outfits so that your baby could also represent their team.
And don’t even talk about grandmas and best friends.
Point is, you will need hangers.
A Simple Pacifier Clip
Babies LOVE pacifiers. The act of sucking soothes them.
So everyone knows how much babies love pacifiers and therefore you are likely to get a few pacifiers, but what people often forget to include is the pacifier clip.
As much as babies love pacifiers, they get spit out and often get lost. And sometimes, they may fall on a dirty, grimy floor and you may not always be within reach of running water to get it cleaned. Every mother knows how distressing it is to try to find a pacifier while your baby is screaming to have it right now!
To relieve your stress levels, just do yourself a favor and get a universal pacifier holder (like the one pictured), because it attaches to all pacifiers.
Hand Sanitizer With Pump
Babies are more susceptible to germs than we are, so as their parents, it is our jobs to make sure we protect them as best we can.
Queue – Hand Sanitizer… with a pump. If you are holding your baby, it will be pretty hard to try to unscrew a bottle of sanitizer. Do yourself a huge favor and make sure you get the pump.
Also, make sure you have at least one bottle for every floor of your house so that you don’t need to go look for hand sanitizer.
Disposable Diaper Bags
You will be changing diapers when you are out and about, and disposable diaper bags are amazing for that. They have built-in ties, and they will seal in odors and wetness.
They’re also convenient and will fit comfortably into your diaper bag.
Steaming Bags To Clean Breastpump Supplies
If you are using a breast pump, you will need to clean the little fixtures that go onto the breast pump, regularly.
Those fixtures are really small and quite hard to clean. This is quite a hassle because your breast pump needs to be sanitary. Enter Medela’s Steam Sanitizing bags.
They are wonderful at doing the job and they’re really easy to use too.
Breast Pumping Bra
If you are pumping milk, this is a must-have because it allows you to be hands-free.
Pumping milk for your baby is time-consuming, and a breast pumping bra makes things so much easier because now you could actually write a note or check your messages while you are pumping.
(Even though these are well worth it, they are a bit expensive. Do check out Mom Hacks to find out how you can easily make your own.)
Nipple Cream
Even when you take all precautions, you will have sore nipples while you are breastfeeding.
There are all kinds of reasons why our nipples get cracked and sore, but the Lansinoh nipple cream is a little life saver.
Diaper Rash Cream
Chances are really good that your baby will have a diaper rash at some time. Sometimes diaper rashes are a symptom of teething, so do not assume anything is necessarily wrong if your baby develops a diaper rash.
You’ll, therefore, need to keep a tub of diaper rash cream on hand, just in case.
Baby Care Timer
As a new mother, you will have a lot on your mind and you just won’t be able to remember everything. When was the last time your baby was fed or changed? If your baby is sick and taking medicine, did you remember to offer medicine?
Baby timers like this one is great at keeping you on track with what all you have to remember.
Note From The Author
While compiling this list of baby items, I tried to be very comprehensive. I thought about all the baby items I really needed but didn’t get at any of my baby showers, (I have 5 children).
If I missed anything, do let me know. I’ll be happy to add it. I’m sure other new moms would appreciate it too.
