(2013) Birth Story
Starring Ina May Gaskin and Rebecca Brown – This is a feature-length documentary about Ina May Gaskin, a counterculture heroine. She and her spirited friends began delivering each other’s babies in 1970. They were on a caravan of hippie school buses, headed to a patch of land in rural Tennessee. The women taught themselves midwifery from the ground up. With their families, they founded an entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm. On “The Farm,” they grew their own food, published their own books, built their own houses, etc. As word of their social experiment spread, they managed to create a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth. Ina May led the charge away from isolated hospital birthing rooms where husbands were not allowed and deliveries with forceps were the norm. Even today, as nearly a third of all babies in the USA are born via C-section, Ina May fights to preserve her community’s hard-won knowledge. This documentary offers incredible access to the midwives’ archival video collection. It captures the unique sisterhood at The Farm Clinic, from its heyday into the present. It also shows childbirth the way most people have never seen it. This film is unabashed, unadorned, and awe-inspiring.
